The Year 2026 Dubbed the Era of the Amphibian Adventure.

My key observation from the recent Day of the Devs showcase was highly engaging, my main revelation was a personal epiphany: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these hoppy characters. Considering a collection of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are launching an invasion.

A Legacy of Leaping

Croaking characters are anything but new to the gaming landscape. From the arcade classic Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a special place. But, their prevalence has noticeably surged in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an overwhelming flood of results. While, some of these are novelty titles, a significant portion are bona fide Frog Games.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To quantify this rise, I undertook a thorough analysis into the recent history of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My approach was admittedly subjective, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The results reveal an unmistakable trend: a consistent uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The amphibian's elevated place in the public consciousness is also visible elsewhere, such as the revival of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. However, the wave in gaming appears especially powerful.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

Frankly, this is a shift I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess natural design advantages for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are incredibly easy to be designed as quirky characters that frequently end up as a highlight in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their long tongues and prehensile tongues lend themselves to a myriad of unique mechanics.

Many of the featured titles clearly utilize these traits. For instance the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what does this mean for 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has even started—and the chance for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the biggest year for amphibian gaming.

Should these games perform well—and historically, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we might just be entering a genuine croaking cultural moment.
