WHO Faces Major Staff Reduction After United States Financial Withdrawal

The international health agency revealed plans to reduce its workforce by nearly a fourth – totaling more than 2,000 jobs – by the middle of 2026.

Financial Shortfall Triggers Substantial Restructuring

This decision follows after the United States, previously the organization's largest contributor, pulled out funding earlier this period.

Washington had been responsible for approximately eighteen percent of the organization's total budget, causing a substantial financial shortfall.

Expected Staff Cuts

According to organizational projections, the staff will decrease from 9,401 positions in early 2025 to around 7,030 by June 2026.

The decrease of two thousand three hundred and seventy-one positions includes staff reductions, employees retiring, and regular departures.

"The past year has been among the most difficult in our history, as we undertook a painful but essential process of prioritization and realignment," stated the organization's director-general.

Budget Gap Remains

This Switzerland-headquartered body currently faces a budget shortfall of $1.06bn for the upcoming period, amounting to nearly a fourth of its required funding.

The figure marks an improvement from a prior estimated shortfall of 1.7 billion dollars noted in May.

Not Included Finances

The budget calculations exclude a further 1.1 billion dollars in expected funding from ongoing discussions with multiple donors.

A representative for the agency noted that the current unfunded part of the budget is in fact lower than in previous years, crediting this to multiple factors:

  • A smaller total budget
  • Initiation of a fresh donor outreach campaign
  • Higher in participating countries' mandatory fees

This restructuring initiative is now nearing its completion, paving the way for the organization to progress with a renewed operational model.
